There is a common misconception that the only way to deal with tooth decay and cavities is by having a dentist drill it out and fill it with synthetic material. Although amalgam fillings can be a solution (unless it contains traces of mercury), there are other ways to reverse its effects which do not necessarily involve visiting your dentist.

To better understand how to deal with this issue more naturally, first we must understand how tooth decay occurs in the first place. It has been witnessed by pioneers of modern dentistry that many isolated indigenous tribes had healthy teeth with little to no tooth decay. However, once they were exposed to the Western diet, things took a turn for the worse.

The culprit, in particular, are carbohydrates (sugar and starches), which allow bacteria to thrive on sugar-rich foods and produce acids as a result. Over time, these acids gradually destroy the tooth enamel and lead to tooth decay. There are four main factors which contribute to this oral condition:

  • Lack of fat-soluble vitamins, such as A, D, E, and K.
  • Lack of minerals in the diet, such as calcium, magnesium, and phosphorus.
  • High intake of phytic acid-rich foods.
  • High intake of processed sugar.

Brushing your teeth and regular flossing are important, but there is more to oral hygiene than just resorting to taking in fluoride. Here are a few tips which can greatly help you reverse cavities naturally:

Removing sugar

There is a war going on between dentists and sugar. You need to curb that sugar addition ASAP if you want cavity-free teeth, because sugar feeds the oral bacteria which prevent the flow of dental fluids and produce acid that can literally demineralize the structural content of your enamel. This means saying goodbye or at least minimizing your intake of soda, candy, baked goods, and other sugary delights. As for artificial sweeteners, toss them in the can. However, if you do get a sweet tooth, stevia and raw honey should be your best friends.

Eliminating phytic acid

This enzyme inhibitor and mineral blocker can be found in seeds, nuts, grains, and beans. The reason it has become an issue is that we no longer use ancient methods of food preparation, like sourdough fermentation or sprouting, which kill off the unabsorbable acid. Diets high in phytic acid can cause all sorts of mineral deficiencies and even osteoporosis.

Raw dairy and nutrient-rich foods are a-ok!

If you need vitamins and minerals, raw dairy can supply you. It is always a good idea to consume products like goat milk kefir, organic grass-fed butter, and raw cheeses because they are rich in calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, fat-soluble vitamins, vitamin K2, and vitamin D3. Your ideal diet should also include animal foods, like meat, fish, eggs, and bone broth, raw and cooked vegetables, foods high on healthy unsaturated fats, fermented grains, and sprouted seeds, nuts, and beans. Also, get plenty of sunshine and say no to processed, packaged, or fat foods.

Either buy or make your own mineralizing toothpaste

Fluoride-free toothpaste can be expensive, but there are several brands which won’t cost you a small fortune. However, if you still intend to save a few bucks, you can always remineralize your teeth by making your own homemade toothpaste. The formula includes:

  • 4 tablespoons of coconut oil
  • 1 tablespoon of xylitol or 1/8 tablespoon of stevia
  • 2 tablespoons of aluminum-free baking soda
  • 20 drops of trace minerals or magnesium/calcium powder
  • 20 drops of peppermint or clove essential oil
